Interview #2

In this interview, I got the opportunity to talk with a student on campus that is very involved with everything the University has to offer. She was already very informed with the Coliseum which is very impressive compared to the other students I have talked to about this topic. This interview helped me look at the stand point of those whom go to these events regularly, as there are not many students who do this.

Q: Have you ever been in Memorial Coliseum? If so for what event?
A: Yes, I attend as many sporting events as I can. I also go to a lot of the student put on events here. Last week I attended Chance the rapper, im looking forward to going to more concerts here because it was a really fun spot for it!

Q: What have you heard about the Coliseum?
A: I have heard a lot about the previous history of the building, like the renovations and the making of Rupp Arena

Q: Who plays at Memorial Coliseum?
A: Women's basketball, Women's Volleyball, Women's gymnastics

Q: What has the new renovations done for the Coliseum?
A: A new training place for the athletes but I think these took away a lot of the seating here. Also I think they put in a really cool lounge for the athletes that play here

Q: Why was Rupp Arena created?
A: For the Men's Basketball team because Memorial Coliseum became too small for the amount of people and fans the team attracted. The team is one of the biggest things UK is known for, so it makes sense for it to have its own Arena that is very luxurious for the players whom are basically celebrities on this campus.

Q: What more would you be interested in knowing about this historic Coliseum?
A: I think it would be cool to know the back story on why it was initially created and if they are looking into doing any more to this building to benefit it and make it more of an attraction to the community.

Q: What do you think Memorial Coliseums role here at UK is?
A: To hold sporting events for some amazing teams here at the University. Also host some cool events mainly put on the student organizations that bring a lot of students to the Coliseum to all come together.

Q:How do you imagine Memorial Coliseum in the future?
A: I think the Coliseum has potential to grow through more renovations and to become a great spot on campus that more students will want to go to. I feel like right now, a lot of students forget about this building due to Rupp Arena being created.

Q: Do you know anyone who goes to the Coliseum regularly for events?
A: Yeah, I mean I try to go to as many as I can with all my friends. I love going here, every time im here I have a fun time and it always has a great environment for sporting events to support the wildcats.
Q: Has this interview helped bring you any awareness to the coliseum?
A: Kind of, I already knew a lot about this building, but I do know most students are not very educated on this building so making a documentary on this will be very beneficial to the UK community.

Interviews

During this interview, I interviewed a student here at the University. This student was not very informed on the Coliseum, which more are not. This interview helped me realize that many students on campus are not informed, or have no idea what Memorial Coliseum has to offer. Going forward from this interview, I know that I have to make my documentary very informing to the public that will make it a must go see on campus. I now will continue with more student interviews to get more viewpoints on these questions.

Q: Have you ever been in Memorial Coliseum? If so for what event?
A: Yes, I have been in the Coliseum before, during sorority recruitment we had our bid day ceremony there. I also have been there for a women's volleyball game.

Q: What have you heard about the Collesium?
A: I have heard that it is very hot and that it has no air conditioning. I also know that it is a memorial to something, but im not quite sure what to?

Q: Who plays at Memorial Collseium?
A: Womens basketball, Chance the Rapper, Women's Volleyball

Q: What has the new renovations done for the Colliseum?
A: Probably a better floor to play sports on or maybe a updated interior. I think they made more seating for the fans too.

Q: Why was Rupp Arena created?
A: For extra space for the fan section since their success shot up and everyone wanted to attend their games.

Q: What more would you be interested in knowing about this historic Collisuem?
A: What and who is this a memorial to? Why is there no air conditioning? What other UK sport teams use Memorial Collesium as their home stadium?

Q: What do you think Memorial Collesiums role here at UK is?
A: To host sports and other special events. I feel that the Collsiem has lost students interest now that mens basketball isn't there.

Q:How do you imagine Memorial Collesium in the future?
A: I imagine that they will renovate it again with comfy seats, air conditioning, and other things that will grab students attention to want to go here more and make it more comfortable for event holding. I know if they put air conditioning it will be much more manageable to go and enjoy my time here.

Q: Do you know anyone who goes to the Collesium regularly for events?
A: I don't know of any personally, but I would imagine friends of volleyball players, friends of the womens basketball team, or anyone that goes to student organization events.

Q: Has this interview helped bring you any awareness to the collisuem?
A: Yes, it has made me interested in attending more events, and seeing what the future of this building holds.

Interviews

When going over our project on Memorial Coliseum, we all agreed upon interviews being the best source and insight to our information to further our projects research. To get all of our interview's done in a timely manor, we assigned each member to a certain person of interest to interview. My interview's that I will be preceding with are from the student body stand point and their thoughts on the Coliseum. This will give us insight onto what Memorial Coliseum looks like to a wide range of students.
When given this audience to interview, I knew I could easily do my friends and take the easy way out of the interview process, however, I plan to interview a wide range of different people that all may see the Coliseum in a different light. This entailing, seniors to freshman, to people that never have stepped foot in, to people that may play a sport that is held in the coliseum. Seeing the range of thoughts and views on just a few distinct students around campus will really give the viewer a good feel to who you can see there, and also the student bodies insight to Memorial Coliseum.
I firmly believe different stand points on the same topics is a crucial part to getting the full feel for something. As I go about these interviews, I plan on asking the same questions to each individual and record their answers. When reviewing my transcripts it will be very intriguing to compare and contrast the Coliseum through different lights. Since I am choosing to do multiple interviews just for my assigned role, not every interview will be filmed to be featured in our documentary, as some may be quoted. I really look forward to starting my interviews with different students and see how Memorial Coliseum stand within their mind.

Rupp arena

Rupp Arena is home to the University of Kentucky men's basketball team and in recent years have hosted some of the Women's Basketball games. The Arena can hold up to 23,500 people, which is the largest arena in the united states that is made specifically for basketball. This being, it is clearly a huge mark in Lexington, Kentucky, as it is also used for conventions, concerts, and shows. Rupp Arena holds an amazing history already and it has only been around since 1976 as it is one of the newer buildings here at the University. Rupp has been home to the NCAA final four in 1985, as well as numerous NCAA regional games. In 2010 the attendance record hit its high point at 24,480 while we faced our all time rival, Louisville. The Men's basketball team have broken the Rupp Arena's attendance record 24 times since it has opened. In those games, the Wildcats have won 20 times and lost 4 times

The Men's Basketball team originally played at Memorial Coliseum until they became more and more popular due to their success and had Rupp Arena made specially for them. Memorial Coliseum contains a massive amount of history from the basketball team. The basketball team is University of Kentucky symbol from all the crazy success that has carried with them throughout the years and continues to do so as the years go by. Besides the location of the game, the basketball team is a power house team that has been handed these luxurious arenas and special privileges that are great, but without that, they would still be just as successful, however the University of Kentucky fan base has been amazing towards the team.

Rupp Arena on game day is not like any place you've ever been. It is the go to place when visiting Lexington Kentucky in the winter time. The excitement to cheer on the wildcats is amazing to experience.

What Makes a Great Documentary

Documentaries commonly are known for its long, boring, and factual qualities. Many are quick to judge as they pass one up airing on television, or even Netflix. As they are fact based films, they can also be very intriguing to watch and learn loads of information about various topics.
In the documentary world, there are countless films that are loaded with information paneling black and white historic pictures playing with the occasional interview here there. This is what comes to mind when most people are on the topic of documentaries. But, if we take time to explore the amazing documentaries out in the film world we can pick out the qualities that make a documentary enjoying to the viewer.
We can start by exploring what well known film makers do in order to make their documentaries interesting to all different viewers. Alex Gibney, a master in the documentary world, discusses his beliefs on what he feels is the most important thing that goes into a good documentary during an interview. "You have to put it together in a way that makes it compelling viewing for people who’re going to come to see it. And, hopefully, there’s enough of the author, too, sometimes in indirect ways, that makes the documentary interesting" (Alex Gibney). Alex brings up a few great point that all  film makers need to take into play, as they tend to forget the different types of audiences viewing this film. Many films are clearly made directly towards women, some to men. This is not the best view point to go about, as you would like to have as many viewers as possible. Documentaries are easy to lose interest in, so it is important to include different aspects to keep the viewer intrigued. From the start of the film, making sure you have a strong captivating hook is key to grabbing you viewer in immediately. Throughout the film, adding the right music is a critical part in adding to your documentary experience. We all know listening to an orchestra is not the ideal music to any viewer, but keep in mind you must still stay on topic with your song choice as it is easy to pick a your favorite song on the top 100 list.
These are just a few of the unlimited things that go into making a great documentary. Going into the start process of making my documentary, my goal is to make sure to keep the interest level up of my audience while keeping the viewers very informed on my topic. Picking out the best features in a good documentary has now put me on track to begin!

Research so far...

So far looking at my research project it has been looking pretty good. I chose to research the topic of Memorial Hall as its history is a rich part of Lexington to what it is today. Memorial Hall is filled with unknown historic artifacts that many are unaware about that I would love to try to make them more apparent to the campus community.
There have been many struggles that have come to play with this topic, as it is hard to find many things about the building. Memorial Hall has limited valid resources available to look at the inner view and the historic artifacts that it contains. From just seeing the limited resources available I can already see how uneducated others are of this building. My research has been based off of my knowledge of the building, visiting the building and exploring the historic artifacts the internet fails to acknowledge.
Going further with my research I hope I can go back to Memorial Hall and talk to someone that is educated on the buildings aspects. This would help me know the history of the things we see in the building and hopefully bring that with me to teach more students about this hidden history.

Ann Rice O'Hanlon's Fresco in Memorial Hall

Ann Rice O' Hanlon

Born and raised in Ashland, Kentucky, Ann Rice O'Hanlon permanently had the drive to pursue art from a young age. She graduated from the University of Kentucky with a master’s degree in art, but then achieved a higher level of art training at the California School of Fine Arts since she only considered her degree at UK as "basic training". By the year of 1931 she was wrapping up her years of art schooling and started to begin her career as an artist, focusing on frescos. At this time O’Hanlon was struggling finically, starving for almost a full year. Luckily, for O’Hanlon Roosevelt came around to help out all the struggling artists. During an interview with O’Hanlon regarding what happened during these hard times an interviewer tried to understand what Roosevelt did to help the artists. “Didn't he assign somebody in each major city of each state or community or area, to hire artists for some major project?” O’Hanlon replied “It wasn't a relief thing in that case, it was simply, they said that the government wanted some art work done and I just happened to be the only person, apparently, in Lexington who was available to do a major work on a wall. And so I was chosen” (Oral History Interview).  O’Hanlon soon took full advantage of this opportunity as she was assigned to paint a Fresco at the University of Kentucky’s Memorial Hall.

Ann Rice O’Hanlon was paid $38.00 a week to work on this fresco, as it was the only thing she really had to do with her time. Her original idea for her painting was incorporate the history standpoint of Kentucky with geography and agriculture that went into the state. This idea rapidly transformed as she received input on what the mural should entail, now starting to gear more towards the people and things that shape who/what Kentucky is today. This fresco that O’Hanlon took on was forty feet by eight feet in height, all to paint on her own. She worked day and night for about eight months slowly adding every detail she could to make it represent Kentucky in the best light. As she completed the Fresco, she was excited for the public to come in and see all the hard work she put in.
Sadly, the public expressed no interest in the fresco at all as no one would care to see it. The painting was written more about people not caring to see it, rather than how intriguing and historic the painting truly is. Now, as we walk into Memorial Hall we admire the art work of Ann Rice O’Hanlon, but never do realize the true struggle she entailed to accomplish this artwork.

Memorial Coliseum

Memorial Coliseum

Home of the athletic department, holding a 10,000 seat arena which houses the women's basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams, Memorial Coliseum is a historic part of campus that just adds on to the rich history of the University. Memorial Hall was originally built to honor to the Kentucky natives that have died in WWI, WWII, the Vietnam, and the Korean War. The building originally hosted the men's basketball team, holding the NCAA men's basketball tournament ten times in the past between the time of 1950-1976. In 1976 the Rupp Arena was built, which is located behind Memorial Coliseum to expand space due to the massive success of the men's basketball team, a place we have all know and love.
After $4 million dollars in renovations, Memorial Coliseum has brought a state of the art training facility to train our athletes to their full potential. Originally, the Coliseum held 11,500 seats, but was forced to be reduced down due to the renovations made, which now results back down to 10,000 seats. However, these luxurious additions included a players lounge, a team meeting center, and even a new athletic administration office. These additions have not only helped improve the Coliseum, but the University of Kentucky as a whole to make it a sight to see to people from all over the world.
